French Motorcycle Posters

It occurred to me today that Benzina magazine only published a small portion of my French Motorcycle Posters, so I thought I should get them up here so everyone could enjoy:

Swedish Motorcycle Posters

I came across a nice grouping of 1950’s Swedish motorcycle racing posters from a dealer in Europe. Nice graphics!

Too bad I can’t afford them…

It is a French poster for the British film, “No Limit” about racing the TT Races back in 1935. You can check out a sample of the film here:

Aug 2014 update: After many years of collecting posters I have only been burned a couple of times. This poster now finds itself on that list. I purchased this poster from a “reputable” dealer, Robert Depietro of CinemaImages. I negotiated a price and paid through Paypal. After the poster failed to arrive within 2 weeks I contacted Robert. He gave me a long story about his assistant failing to send the poster and apologized for the delay, stating that he would get it out to me right away. 2 weeks later I contacted him to inquire if it had been sent out. He said that he had sent the poster Priority Mail but did not get a tracking number and that it should be there in a day or two. Another week went by and it failed to arrive. This time emails went unanswered. 2 more weeks past so I blasted out an angry email and attempted to make a Paypal claim, which I filed just past the 60 day deadline, so no refund was possible. A week later I received an email from Robert detailing a long hospital stay and more apologies for being nice and patient. He stated that he had made a claim on his end with the post office and that he should have a refund soon, which I doubted, as he obviously did not take extra insurance to match the purchase price, nor send it Priority Mail, which would have given him a tracking number. To date I never heard another word from Robert Depietro or anyone else at CinemaImages. Nor did I ever receive the poster or any refund. I am truly disappointed and hope that karma catches up to this disreputable seller. Someday I will find this poster again and will add it to my collection. Until then, I urge you all to be wary, and don’t buy from CinemaImages or Robert DePietro of Houston, Texas.

Benzina Magazine Article

The crew over at Benzina Magazine were kind enough to get excited about my motorcycle poster collecting and asked to feature a selection in their magazine. I sent them so many images that they had to break them up into 2 features. The first layout is debuting next month in issue 11 and concentrates on a few of the French posters I have in my collection. If they have room in issue 12 they will post examples of my American posters. Here is a sample of the upcoming layout:

The bad news is that the magazine is a British publication that is not readily available in the U.S. The good news is that you can order copies of the magazine and some great swag at their website. They concentrate on classic Italian bikes and their blog is quite interesting so check ’em out. Enjoy!

Vintage 1960’s Motorcycle Poster Treasure Trove

Wow, sometimes it pays to ask the right questions… I was recently talking to a young hipster in Casarama and the subject migrated from vintage leather jackets to vintage motorcycles. In the conversation my young hipster friend mentioned that his uncle and grandfather used to race TT Flat Track races back in the 1960’s and were an integral part of forming the American Cycle Association to counterbalance the newly forming strict regulations by the AMA on TT racing and the dangers associated with it. Being a poster collector, I quickly asked if he might have any old posters or memorabilia associated with his uncle or grandfather. He scratched his head and said, “I think my Grandpa has tons of old paper goods out in his shed, but they have been there since the 1960’s and the rats and water have damaged them. I will check next time I’m at his ranch and see if any are salvageable.”

I had nearly given up on the conversation after a few weeks, thinking that he either didn’t check, or that there was nothing there. Well, lo-and-behold, yesterday he turned up with a couple of hand-fulls of paper in my shop. He said that he had dug into drawers and had unearthed “tons” of old posters, mailers, programs and banners that had survived the carnage of the years of water and mice. He said he had duplicates of many. I was about to get excited when he also told me that he had done some research after finding them and had found that Bonham’s Auction House had listed an exact copy of one of the posters and had valued it at $300 – $500 at auction. His feeling was now that all of them were worth $300 -$500 EACH! Sometimes I hate the internet, but what I really hate is that people believe that what they read is always the truth. I tried to reason with the young man and tell him that I have never paid more than $150 for any vintage motorcycle poster, and those were the best examples. Never-the-less, he stood his ground and I was forced to pay a little more than I was comfortable with in hopes that he might turn up with some more in the next few weeks. This is what I bought so far, and barring that his phone inquiry with Bonham’s doesn’t undermine my reasoning, I just might get some more in the future:

A Few Posters From French Dealers

For the prices they sell these posters for you would think that they would get a decent camera and take some better photos…
